This is a great game, easy and fun to play but with enough strategy to get you thinking. Kids can pick this up really well too. You draw cards with different cities you have to connect, then collect cards to claim routes on the board. Sometimes your planned route will get blocked, which can be frustrating, but more often than not you can find a different route, which is part of the fun of planning. If you like trains and maps, you'll love this game. There are lots of different versions of the game around with slightly different rules - I haven't yet played any of the others, but I'd love to try some of them.

Smoothly Rail

I am not a fan of trains and I was not so keen on trying "Ticket to Ride". Soon after starting, I was hooked. It was a great game and it is one where you can strategically set the level of challenge for yourself as part of the game-play.
Game-play itself is very smooth and surprisingly easy to get comfortable with. With few stages in each round, play is kept moving with no real lulls in the pace.
The presentation is awesome and there is little left to be desired. The art is great and the pieces all work really well and are easy to manipulate. The scope for strategic develop and growth of the players is immense and this is a game that will keep you engrossed for a great deal of time. Even the set up is really easy compared to other games.
Even if you are not a rail fan, give this game a shot. It is very good and well worth it. It is a real hoot!
