Arboretum is a card game where you grow your very own botanical garden. Making the most beautiful arboretum will not be an easy task, and some planning will be required. Which species will you choose? Lilac, willow, or maybe maple? Keep an eye out on your opponents, manage your hand wisely, and your arboretum will be blooming!
This is a wonderful game! It’s simple to learn and the cards are beautiful. A must for anyone who loves a new card game, as this one is unique from others I have played.
This game would have been 5 stars if it wasn’t for the “right to score” rule which annoys my young family no end! So we play with our own rule that we can all score any legitimate arboretum that we made, which keeps the kids wanting to come back and play again and again.
I think almost everyone looking at this game can instantly see how beautiful it is, but how long can a beautiful game hold your attention? Is there more than the superficial appearance to make this something you'll take off the shelf to play regularly?
YES! Whilst the cards are gorgeous the real magic with this game is in the mechanic which is both simple and creates room for great strategic complexity. We had a pile of games to play the night we first tried this and yet after one game, there was no question that we'd play another straight away.
Before buying the game I'd read through the rules and watched a video and thought the scoring system looked a little complex. When you have the cards in hand and on the table, the scoring is actually very easy. The mechanic is so well constructed, so simple, there may be the temptation to overthink it, but the small rules pamphlet really tells you everything you need to know.
This is game is really good with two players but also really fun with more and has its unique challenges as the number of players increase.
At the price point, this is a game that should be in everyone's collection.
One last tip; the cards are so beautiful and you're going to play this a lot over the years, so invest in card protectors to keep them looking amazing.
