Fantastic stories told with just cards

OK let's get this out of the way. Arkham Horror Card Game (AHCG) is a bit of a money pit. Be prepared to spend $ on what feel like one-off scenarios. There is replay-ability, but really you just want to keep forging on to new scenarios. Which means buying more packs. And be aware that for 3-4 players you need TWO of these base sets to have enough cards. I suspect it plays best at 2-player, with someone you get along pretty well with.

But if you're prepared to stump up some cash for this experience, it's a great one. Fantasy Flight manages to tell some really good, immersive stories here, with just cards on the table. The investigator characters are engaging, and you can play the game with whatever level of role-playing you want. It's tough, and you don't win every scenario, but that is part of the story. You lick your wounds and box on.
This game does suffer from the usual Fantasy Flight ills: fiddly rules and lots of tokens. And storage challenges. But get through that, and it's an immersive and fun experience.
